Wax Tailor
Did you know that you can listen to all Wax Tailor albums on his webpage in case you didn’t get your hands on the CDs or LPs? Just some of the best hip hop music out there, imho.

#17 Just some random doodles.
I spent the weekend in Berlin, spending my birthday at the Dr.Sketchy-Exhibition, doing some research in the ethnological museum, drawing a lot, enjoying the nice weather etc.
Since grooveshark isn’t available in germany any more, i had to find other ways to find and listen to new music. So i “discovered” bandcamp and i love it. It’s too easy to find new music and buy it. And quite often you can set a price yourself, also all money goes directly to the musicians, which i think is great. I spent a lot of money on CDs because i don’t want to rip off fellow artists, but how much of what i paid actually makes it to them? I guess it’s not much.
Here’s what i bought in the last three weeks.
Grita Goldstein – Grita Goldstein (free)
Darren Korb – Bastion OST
Blue Sky Archives – Plural & Blue Sky Archives EPs
Eaten by bears – teeth
Ben Caplan & the casual smokers – in the time of the great remembering
I Build Collapsible Mountains – The Spectator & The Act
The Oh Hello’s – The Oh Hello’s
Kasper Rosa – First Breath. First Blood. & Coronal Mass Ejection
freelancing would look more like this!

I’d love to share some insight on what’s going on with this one. If i had any myself.
There’s number 12, even though i enjoyed the Immortal Iron Fist Comics by Brubaker/Fraction/Aja i never really could take the guy serious.

I still struggle with simplistic stuff like this. But i enjoy it so much. Have to take out the Charley Harper book once more.
I’m so bad at doing regular things besides work. Sorry. I have to force myself to not just work but take time to sketch. Here’s another one.

Who ever said that dragons had to be creatures of flesh and blood?

Wishful thinking.
For warmer temperatures.
I’m a bit off my rythm due to the late nighter, but here’s todays sketch.

Just found this on a tumblr i follow. Unfortunately no credit given. I’d love to know who the artist is to search for more works like this. It’s fabulous.
Edit 6.february:
That’s a good start into the week. This morning i got an e-mail from Igino letting me know that the artist of this piece is Franz von Bayros, and the artwork is part of a series called “Lesbische Reigen 1920″. Igino also provided the wikipedia-links.

Thanks a lot Igino.
This one started out as a quick sketch but then i scribbled and colorized all night until 6am just to change the colors and lighting again, after a couple of hours of sleep but with fresh eyes.
I think I’ll have to dust off my bristol paper sheets and train my analog brush/ink work. I don’t like doing Lineart like that in Photoshop. It just… lacks… charm.
And it’s a pain in the ass to do all those straight lines in 3point perspective. Seriously!
One of my favorite erotic art-tumblr’s accepted my submission. Thanks a lot for your kind words!

And Duc added it to his tumblr even before. Thanks mate!
I smile a lot
Haiko uploaded three of the 13 illustrated cards to boardgamegeek and they got approved over night. The game has been published already under the name “Utopian Rummy”. I illustrated a revision of the game, new design and changes to the rules. This new version will be published as “Plato 3000″. As soon as there’s a standalone page for Plato 3000 I’ll add the link.
Card design by Haiko Günther, all illustration by me.

That’s sort of how it feels like if i go out these days. Knocked out cold by fierce temperatures.

just got the e-mail and am now listening into the first 30min (first 30min are for free on the site):
The art of freelancing – Noah Bradley
edit: OK, now i listened through the 30mins. There’s basically nothing wrong, but i’m also not very impressed. The kind of information he talks about is available for free and also quite ofen common sense. Instead of spending 57$ on the video (so far there hasn’t been any reason for it being a video instead of a podcast anyways) you could as well register at one of the large community sites like conceptart.org, digitalartforum.de, cgsociety, deviantart etc. and connect to other artists. Try to learn if there’s a local meetup of artists, go the your local scetchcrawl event and speak to other artists or just reach out via e-mail to professional artists. Quite often you’ll get a nice response.
Sorry, no 57$ from me. Don’t think it’s worth my money & time.
I get more out of escapefromillustrationisland,an audible registration and listening through Linchpin and the harvard business review.
I didn’t know Leopold Schmutzler until today but i was immediately caught by his intense semi-erotic paintings. Brief research didn’t turn up much info on him, have to look into him further possibly by actually going to a library.
He lived and worked in austria and germany until 1940 and i guess it didn’t help his reputation that he was put onto the infamous “Gottbegnadeten”-list – the list of artists that were in favor of the Nazis and were therefore spared from military service or pursuit.
I’ll search for more infos on him and see if i can digg up a larger gallery of his works or even a book.
January is over. The first month of being a freelancer again after one year of employement as Lead Concept Artist. So how’d it go?
Pretty good actually. But i have to start with the end of december.
By the end of december i had signed a contract with a new art-rep. He’s new but the contract was fair (quite unusual) and i’m confident that it will be a great relationship. He already gathered a stunning team of illustrators which should tell you a bit about how good the contract and the contact is.
At the beginning of january i worked on some advertising layout illustrations which unfortunately i won’t be able to show you for at least a year or two. It had some really strange motifs to be illustrated, but it was fun to do and a great start into the month.
After that i started doing some work on a private project together with my lovely girlfriend Maike and with help from Thomas Ulbricht of Lockruf.
I had to pause the work on the private project to do a test piece for a AAA-title. Seems like the test piece was well recieved and i will do more work for them in the following months. Can’t talk or show anything for at least the next 3 years. Sorry.
I did a small illustration for Anne Zender in exchange for some help with a business card for my brother, i posted the illustration a few days ago.
And after the test piece i spent the last 10-14 days illustrating a small card came for the Cambridge Games Factory – this job has been made possible by my friend Haiko, who’s doing the design work on the whole game. I’ll be able to show some of the illustrations in a few days or maybe even later this day.
For february right now i have a small book cover illustration on my ToDo-List, a movie poster, another illustration for Anne, more work on the private project and more concept art. But it’s just the first day of february, so things might change.
I’m looking forward to making a thought-through illustration out of this.
